Onboarding is a conversion system

The first-run experience is where product value, user intent and business outcomes collide.

The premise

Onboarding is often treated as a sequence of explanatory screens. It is better understood as a conversion system: a negotiation between intent, trust, effort and value.

The decision

The right question is not how quickly every step can disappear. Some friction protects comprehension, consent or confidence. The job is to distinguish useful friction from accidental cost.

The standard

Measure the behaviour after the flow, not only completion. A shorter onboarding that produces confused users can be an efficient way to create churn.
